"Pages per sheet" in the print dialog doesn't scale to a production run

Every print dialog has a "pages per sheet" option — and it works fine for one document at your desk. But it doesn't combine separate files, it doesn't add cut guides, and it lives in the driver, so the layout changes with the printer and can't be saved, shared, or handed to a print shop. When you have 500 half-letter receipts as 500 separate PDFs, "pages per sheet" is useless.

Print Layout decides the arrangement in the PDF, not at the printer. Load all your files, pick a layout once, and it produces a single print-ready PDF with the pages imposed N-per-sheet — identical on every printer, ready to email or send to production. Two half-letter forms stacked on a Letter sheet with a cut line down the middle, or four pages per sheet for a contact-sheet proof — the same result, every time.

Set the grid, get the sheet

2-up, stacked

Two pages one above the other on a portrait sheet (2 rows × 1 column). The natural fit for landscape half-letter forms and receipts — two per Letter page with a horizontal cut guide across the middle.

2-up, side by side

Two pages next to each other on a landscape sheet (1 row × 2 columns) with a vertical cut guide. Right for portrait half-letter pages and two-column booklets.

4-up

Four pages per sheet in a 2 × 2 grid. Great for proof sheets, thumbnails, and cutting the paper count on long documents by 75%.

Custom grid

Any Rows × Columns arrangement on Letter, Legal, or A4, portrait or landscape. Configurable outer margin and gutter between slots, in points, with optional cut guides along every interior boundary.

Each page scaled to fit, centered, and clipped

Every source page is fit to its slot on the output sheet:

Grid Rows × Columns = pages per sheet (2×1, 1×2, 2×2, ...)
Sheet Letter / Legal / A4, portrait or landscape
Fit Scale-to-fit, centered, aspect preserved (no distortion)
Visible area Uses each page's crop box, so whitespace isn't imposed
Cut guides Dashed lines along interior slot boundaries (optional)
Margin/Gutter Outer margin and inter-slot spacing, in points

Because it keys off each page's visible (crop) area, a form that occupies only part of its sheet is placed at its real size, not shrunk with the surrounding whitespace. The imposed output is flattened content — interactive form-field widgets are not carried through, which is what you want for a clean print-ready sheet. Fill or flatten forms first if you need field values kept.

Fewer sheets, cleaner cuts, one file

Half-Letter Forms & Receipts

A driving school prints 500+ half-letter DMV receipts. Load them all, pick 2-up stacked with cut guides, and get one Letter-size PDF — two receipts per page, a cut line down the middle, half the paper.

Proof & Contact Sheets

A design team imposes a 200-page catalog 4-up to proof the whole thing on 50 sheets, then prints the final at full size — same file set, two layouts, no manual paste-up.

Save Paper at Scale

An operations team runs monthly statement packets 2-up before printing, cutting the print bill and mailing weight without touching the source documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I put two PDF pages on one sheet?

Choose the 2-up preset: two pages stacked one above the other on a portrait sheet, or two side by side on a landscape sheet. Print Layout scales each source page to fit its slot, centered and without distortion, and can draw a cut guide down the seam. Pages per sheet is set by the Rows × Columns grid — 2 rows × 1 column places two per sheet.

Can I fit two half-letter forms on one Letter page?

Yes. A landscape half-letter form is 8.5 × 5.5 inches, so two stack exactly on one Letter portrait sheet. Load the forms, pick 2-up stacked, enable cut guides, and you get one print-ready PDF with two forms per page and a cut line across the middle.

Does it combine multiple files into one output?

Yes. Print Layout takes all loaded files, in order, and imposes their pages onto a single combined print-ready PDF — no separate merge step. Load hundreds of one-page receipts and get one file laid out N pages per sheet.

What sheet sizes and layouts are supported?

Letter, Legal, and A4, in portrait or landscape, on any Rows × Columns grid. Presets cover 2-up stacked, 2-up side-by-side, and 4-up (2×2). Outer margin and inter-slot gutter are configurable in points, and cut guides can be drawn on every interior boundary.

What happens to interactive form fields?

Imposed output is flattened content — each page's visible content is placed as a static graphic, so interactive form-field widgets are not carried into the output. That's usually what you want for print-ready sheets; fill or flatten forms first if you need the field values kept.

Are originals preserved?

Yes. Print Layout writes a new combined PDF to the filename and folder you choose. Source files are never modified, and all processing is local — nothing is uploaded.
